![]() So, he and his wife (Denise Richards), his mother (Doris Roberts) and their two kids are shipped off to Madea's not quite as regal as they are used to estate. ![]() The FBI has offered our fall guy a deal if he testifies, but they have to keep him alive long enough for him to do so. In case you haven't quite caught on to the story, this time around Madea finds herself recruited by a nephew to play protective mother hen to a corporate executive (Eugene Levy) who finds himself taking the fall for a Ponzi scheme run by the mob. It's not a world without entertainment value, though it's arguable that the whole Madea thing is getting a wee bit tired and even Perry himself seems a bit less energized and inspired in this latest production, Madea's Witness Protection. So, the world of Tyler Perry and Madea continues. Perry's films have never been huge money makers but, with very few exceptions, they've always made back their production budget and/or turned a tidy little profit. What's even more miraculous is that, if we're being honest, Perry isn't a brilliant filmmaker nor actor.īut, quite simply, Perry has learned exactly what his audiences appreciate and he gives it to them. The fact that Perry has built a solid audience for his films despite their largely being morality plays that center around a core character in drag is, quite simply, nothing short of miraculous. It's hard not to admire Perry, whose films are a cross between broad stage comedies and faith-inspired morality films. Since then, Perry has created a mini-empire in his hometown of Atlanta, an empire based largely upon his stage productions and occasional other directorial efforts. It seems like Tyler Perry's Madea character has been around forever, but in reality it all began in 2005 with Perry's adaptation from stage of Diary of a Mad Black Woman. ![]() It's just fun.Even the funniest joke is only funny for so long. And what a choir! I'm not really a fan of black church music, but these people were fantastic. And Madea in the big city? Priceless! All the deception and scheming really made this work for me. What I wasn't expecting was the road trip, and getting through airport security was absolutely hilarious. She won't take that kind of business from anyone, but if you let her show you love, she will. Dignified as the FBI agent, silly as Uncle Joe, and, well, what can you say about Madea? I've seen a couple of her movies and you just have to like her, if you are capable of it. Regardless of what anyone thinks of Tyler Perry, he was great here in three very different roles, and the visual effects crew made him appear to be in scenes with himself quite convincingly. Doris Roberts was funny as a family member losing her mind. This is different? Maybe he needed the money, but of course he added to the quality here. I don't quite understand why he would be here, because years ago he complained about a quality TV series he co-starred in being taken over by a clown. John Amos did his usual fine job as the pastor. Eugene Levy, of course, gave his usual good performance doing what he does best, a frustrated and somewhat wimpy man who can't seem to cope with all the chaos around him. Whether she could act or not, Denise Richards sure was pretty to look at, and even if Cindy hated her, she was nice enough. A lot of details were missing but I was able to figure out what had happened. Yes, these people were as much fun as I assumed they would be when I was introduced. The bratty teenage daughter resented being told to accept her father's second wife. No, this channel is not on cable and I wouldn't have seen what it was showing anyway. I even checked the listings (which I don't normally do) and saw "To be announced". I didn't have time to watch any more of this movie, as I had something to watch that the DVR had recorded, but I assumed I had seen it somewhere and could tell I would have really enjoyed it. Earlier in the day, I turned on a different TV with a DVR that records from an antenna (the other DVR uses cable) and met a dysfunctional family. As soon as I saw the family, I realized I knew them. ![]() ![]() But when I watched, the commercial break ended precisely as the recording started. The listings said it started at 2 and that's when recording started. ![]()
